What Kind of Help Does Statewide Legal Services Give? Statewide Legal Services is a legal aid telephone Hotline program. We talk to callers about many different noncriminal legal problems. Some of the problems we can talk to you about include family, employment, benefits (like social security, welfare and medical), and housing. There is no charge for our services, but we can only help people with very low income.
How Do I Get Help from Statewide Legal Service? To get help from Statewide Legal Services you have to telephone us (we do not see clients in the the office).. You will talk to several different people. The first person you will talk to is called a screener. The screener will ask you questions about you, your family and about your total household income. The reason she will be asking you these questions is to help us decide whether we can help you. The next person you will talk to is a called an advocate. The advocate will discuss your problem and then will talk to you about ways that you can fix your problem. In some situations the advocate will try to arrange to have someone from one of the other legal aid programs or a volunteer lawyer help you with your problem.
What Other Information Can I Get from Statewide Legal Services? Statewide Legal Services has a large number of client information booklets on many different legal subjects. Most of the people who talk to a Statewide Legal Services Advocate will get a booklet that will give then information about their legal problem. All of our booklets are available by using this web site. You can get to them by going back to the Home Page and click on the Legal Booklets button. Or, you can click on the Search button and type in the word that best describes your legal problem. Once you have done that you will be able to choose from a number of booklets that have information about your legal problem.

Personal information can mean things like your social security number, address, and telephone number. SLS takes care to keep your information safe in our computers and documents files. We will not give out your personal information to anyone you don’t want us to unless required by law.
